HEAD OF FINANCE

THE ROLE:

Location: Calgary

Hours: Full time (4 days working in the office, and optional 1 day work from home), 37.5 hours per week

Reporting to: President

On behalf of our client, a prominent family office, we are looking to fill their need for a Head of Finance.  The successful candidate will demonstrate strong expertise and practical experience in financial reporting and Canadian income tax matters and be responsible for many facets of the office’s operations including financial and management reporting, regulatory compliance and investment management for the purpose of supporting the current and future needs of the family.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional with strong interpersonal skills and financial skills. The Head of Finance will be self-motivated and exhibit very strong analytical and communication skills in a small high performing team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Head of Finance will supervise and receive support from one Executive Assistant/Junior Accountant and have regular involvement with corporate Directors and other stakeholders. The family office activities are carried on through a holding company/operating subsidiaries structure, and will include several private corporations, partnerships, and trusts. The current business and investment activities include oil and gas, real estate development, commercial leasing, debt/equity portfolios and other endeavors primarily in Canada and the U.S.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Management and financial reporting, both interim and annual;
  • Canada and U.S. income tax compliance reporting and cross-border tax awareness;
  • Treasury management and planning;
  • Risk management (property, liability, interest rate, currency and other identified risks);
  • Project/investment management and deal due diligence;
  • Assist in maintenance of corporate governance policies, procedures and documentation as required;
  • Preparation of quarterly and year-end financial statements, MD&A and supporting schedules, including for:
    • The parent company
    • Three Canadian subsidiaries and one U.S. subsidiary
    • Personal trusts
    • General partnership
    • Some assistance with a charitable foundation, where required
  • Oversight of the general accounts payable and receivable cycles;
  • Maintenance of financial records for cashbooks, synoptic journals, and general ledgers;
  • Preparation of corporate, federal, and provincial income tax and/or capital tax returns as required, including all supporting tax information, completing corporate tax instalments and balance due calculations, and coordinating with external tax experts, where needed;
  • Maintain internal treasury reporting and monitor for optimization;
  • Collaborating with Directors to maintain cash forecasts, including business and shareholder requirements;
  • Assess investment alternatives and monitor investment performance;
  • Manage corporate debt and credit facilities, including financial reporting and other compliance requirements, and intercompany activities;
  • Assess tax (including cross-border) and other implications of liquidity alternatives and intercompany activities;
  • Monitor corporate insurance policies including property/liability/course of constructure/key-man insurance;
  • Assimilate new investments into management and financial systems; and
  • Other special projects as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERRED SKILLSET:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of 10+ years of financial experience supplemented by a professional accounting designation;
  • Experience with business transactions (including both planning and execution), investment management and U.S. tax compliance will be advantageous;
  • Experience with ASPE;
  • Professionalism and strong business acumen complemented by strong listening skills is essential;
  • Highly organized, detail oriented and adaptable;
  • Self-motivated, pro-active, and self-starter;
  • Calm, patient, and balanced personality with a sense of humor;
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality regarding discussions, records, files, documents, and information;
  • Ability to independently prioritize with strong multi-tasking skills while meeting deadlines and desired outcomes; and
  • Successful back check process for both criminal and credit.
