ASSISTANT CURATOR

THE ROLE:

Location: Warehouse located in South Calgary

Reports to: History Collections Curator & Administrator

Viridian Family Office is currently seeking an individual to join our team as an Assistant Curator. This position assists the History Collections Curator & Administrator in the care and management of the Viridian Family Office History Collections, with a strong focus on cataloguing corporate and family history artifacts in the collections management system.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Process the collection including accessioning, cataloguing (in MIMSY XG collections management software), numbering, photographing, condition reporting, and storing objects;
  • Prepare a large collection of still images for digitization;
  • Catalogue digital assets in ACDSee;
  • Assist Curator with specific tasks surrounding exhibit/display production, installations, maintenance, preparing graphics, illustrations, labels and artifact mounts as required;
  • Respond to client requests for information, artifacts, photographs, documents, and digital assets;
  • Conduct research pertaining to client requests, objects, and corporate history;
  • Assist Curator with the handling of new donations, loans, and other administrative processes;
  • Assist with tours of the History Collection for Viridian staff, Shareholders, and clients;
  • Conduct pest inspections, RH/temperature recordings, and storage checks;
  • Assist Curator with ongoing projects as required; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERRED SKILLSET:

The incumbent must be a highly organized, self-motivated, and energetic team player. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written are essential.  Other requirements include:

  • A minimum of an undergraduate-level degree in history, museum studies, library sciences, or a related field is required;
  • 2+ years’ experience in curatorial or collections management work;
  • Experience with MIMSY XG or other collections management software;
  • Knowledge of collections management policies, practices and procedures pertaining to museum objects, storage and preparation of exhibits;
  • Knowledge of museum standard procedures for the care, handling and preservation of multiple mediums of objects, including but not limited to, artifacts, objects, furniture, equipment, photographs, film and documents;
  • Strong organizational, management, and critical-thinking skills;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Research, photography, and photo editing skills are an asset; and
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry 20kg.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successfully complete a background and credit check;
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada;
  • 2+ years of experience in a similar role and/or training in collections management/curation;
  • Competent in Microsoft Office products;
  • Experience with MIMSY XG is an asset;
  • Experience with ACDSee is an asset;
  • Proven ability to uphold a high level of confidentiality and professionalism;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to meet deadlines paired with an ability to prioritize; and
  • Be adaptable, flexible, open to change and able to function effectively in a team environment.
